Born and raised in Soshanguve she attended and completed high school at Pretoria High School for Girls. Dr Mathabe Sehlapelo pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Pretoria, where she graduated in 2008 with distinctions in Anaesthesia, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine. After graduation, Dr Sehlapelo went on to complete her internship at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, followed by her community service year at the Johannesburg Metro District Hospitals and Clinics.
After this, Dr Sehlapelo worked at Orange Farm Community Health Centre linked to a non-profit organisation known as Anova Health Institute who are involved in the treatment and management of HIV patients. It was during this time that she obtained her Diploma in HIV Management under the College of Family Physicians of South Africa and Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the University of Witwatersrand.
In 2014 she spend a year as a medical officer training in the Intensive Care Unit of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, followed by a year in the department of anaesthesia. She began her registrar training in 2016 in Anaesthesia in the Johannesburg circuit. After qualifying as a specialist through the College of Medicine of South Africa, she completed her Master of Medicine in Anaesthesia at the University of Witwatersrand.
With her expertise, Dr Sehlapelo has also been actively involved in the training and supervision of specialists-in-training and medical students, as well as participating in studies that were being carried out in the Department of Anaesthesia at the University. With extensive knowledge in the field of Anaesthesia, she works as a consultant Anaesthesiologist at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the third largest hospital in the world. While being actively involved in the tertiary hospital environment, anaesthetising a myriad of surgical conditions some of which are complex in nature referred from other hospitals, Dr Mathabe Sehlapelo has carved a niche for herself in the fields of neuroanaesthesia and airway management.
